Voice from the Past
I’m going to detour from the two-wheeled world for a moment. Yesterday morning, I awoke to a familiar voice on the radio. NPR’s Weekend Edition did a piece on author Jo Ann Beard and her new book, In Zanesville. Jo Ann and I hung out together for a couple of years back in 1980s. She is brilliant, kind to people and animals and her sense of humor is first-rate! (Remembering her description of a neighbor in spandex bike shorts… well, suffice it to say I don’t want to think about it while drinking a carbonated beverage!) I have not read her new book, but her previous work, The Boys of My Youth, is worth seeking out. Her descriptions and images of childhood were so powerful they unlocked some vivid images and memories from my own youth. Best wishes Jo Ann. I’m on my way to Prairie Lights to pick up a copy for my 14 year-old daughter, but I will be reading it first!
