Ironweed at the Exposition
Happy Groundhog Day!
I can never remember if it is a good thing or a bad thing if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow. Okay, I stopped and looked it up. If you don’t care for winter, it’s a bad thing if fuzzy Phil sees his shadow – which he did. So, looks like there are six more weeks of winter weather.
This has been a particularly cold and snowy winter, so some of us in the Midwestern tundra are desperate for a little positive news on the topic of winter’s end. But given the cold and snow of this winter, six weeks doesn’t seem so bad. I mean yesterday it got up to about 30 and I was tempted to put on sunscreen. I know I really should just embrace winter and get me one of them fat tire bikes. The burning questions are: 1) Do fat tire bikes come in my size? 2) Can you put a rack on it? And, 3) Where would I keep it?
In other news, as I mentioned in my previous post, I attended the Iowa Bike Coalition’s Expo last weekend. It was really well attended. I ran into a few people I had not seen in many years. And there was a guy, a doctor from Des Moines, who stopped by the booth to share a story of Ironweed.
He stepped up the booth and said, “Are you Ironweed?” To which I replied, “Well, I guess so, yes.” It was one of those questions that you’re never really sure what’s coming next. It could be, “I really love your bags!” or “Your kid just broke my window!”
Instead he told me a story about ordering some rims from Practical Cycles in England to complete a Raleigh roadster restoration. A couple of weeks after the rims arrived, he and his wife were putting up their Christmas tree. His wife thought it would be best if they put a piece of cardboard under the tree stand. So the good doctor goes out and cuts a chunk off of the Practical Cycles shipping box. Upon examination, he notices the box has been recycled and there’s an old Ironweed shipping label on the inside.
There was a great guy from All Ability Cycles in Jefferson, Iowa, at the Expo. They’re a shop that specializes in cycling products for folks with special needs. They are also a Brompton dealer. So I test rode a couple of Bromptons. I was really impressed with their selection. They had probably 10 Bromptons in their booth. The All Ability folks were great and totally indulged me, letting me ride laps around the basement of Vets Auditorium. A fine finish to a fun-filled day.
Lastly, I switched our Ironweed Bags Facebook page from a personal account to a business page. So, please go and like us if you want to keep up on the latest Ironweed happenings and whatnot.
