Vintage Trailers for Cargo and Kids

3/16/2014

Trailers for hauling cargo and kids are very popular these days.  I saw my first red and yellow Burley trailer hauling a couple of kids on RAGBRAI around 1980.  I was fascinated with it.

I later bought a Burley and pulled my daughters around in it.  I can vividly picture the two of them sitting side-by-side with their tiny hands curled around the fabric at the front of the trailer.  On the way home from the park, they would chant i
n unison for me to take one of Iowa City’s surviving brick streets so they could sing and shout while the bumpy ride added a little vibrato to their voices.

I’ve always been fascinated with bicycle trailers; first as cargo carriers, then as kid carriers.  A lot more options have come on the market in the past decade.  In the US, production bicycle trailers started to come on to the scene in the late 70's and early 80's with Blue Sky and Burley.

But in France, trailers were popular long before.  I remember seeing old funky trailers around France and that was 25 years ago. I've put together a few pictures of interesting vintage French trailers for cargo and kids.

re: http://www.ironweedbp.com/uploads/3/0/8/9/3089502/1152413_orig.jpg

I'm looking for a suitable part connecting a similar trailer hitch to the seat post and really shouldn't be ending my search in plumbing components buying a Munsen ring - what is the proper term for the clamp and particularly where is it available - only some of this type trailer hitch are supplied with it and the price is often disproportionately higher than for those without..., I'm currently using something I made from a car part which ought to be ideal, but for the size difference, it's so much reduced in diameter and trimmed down, it could be any piece of metal...

The point to note is that a seat clamp is usually an M6 quick release and woe betide boring it larger, very little materials to speak of, it would become too flimsy, yet the M8 bore for the trailer hitch coupling to the post clamp suggests there is a part ready made for purpose - so any pointers please....?

Much appreciated
Kind regards

It's about a metre wide and 1.5m long,

I have resolved most issues now - scaffolding pole for the bar and the hitch is affixed bolted through the seat post and also welded - the size permits quite large and heavy loads - so I've just gone heavy duty..., everything else was twisting off no matter how tight it was fastened.
